4K UHD And Surround Sound for Ruutu – Powered by Media Tailor

On March 11, 2025, Nelonen Media took a significant step forward in developing the domestic streaming offering by launching the new Ruutu+ Premium service. This service delivers ultra-high-definition picture quality, immersive surround sound, and an uninterrupted, ad-free viewing experience. In addition, the service allows Ruutu content to be watched on two devices simultaneously within the same household.

As the latest Mediavision analysis shows, streaming in Finland is growing rapidly, with 60% of Finnish households now having at least one paid streaming service. Since 2018, the number of paid streaming subscriptions in Finland has doubled.

However, there is still room for growth, as the household subscription rate in other Nordic countries is 70%. This new service is Nelonen Media’s answer to the competition.

While UHD and surround sound are already familiar features on international streaming platforms, Ruutu has been a pioneer in introducing these features in Finland.

Media Tailor played a key role in developing and implementing the media management backend processes and technical solutions for Ruutu+ Premium. Media Tailor’s responsibilities included the technical processing of content and quality optimization, and balancing high picture quality with smooth viewing experiences across different connection speeds.

The initial content offering for Ruutu+ Premium includes approximately 180 original series from Elisa Viihde, with a focus on domestic comedy and drama. The content offering will be expanding even further from here.
